A Day At The Village Community School of Sarasota
A school day designed to build understanding, wisdom, and capability.
Every part of the Village day has a purpose. Students begin with focused academics, gather around the table for Scripture and thoughtful conversation, then apply what they are learning through practical work, projects, exploration, leadership, and service.
9:45 AM-12:00 PM | Morning builds understanding
Students begin the day in level-based academic groupings. Core instruction includes Math, Reading, Writing, and Language Arts. Teachers use pre-semester assessments, parent notes, observation, and student progress to meet learners where they are and strengthen foundational skills.
Students are grouped by assessed readiness rather than grade alone.
A student may work at different levels in different subjects.
Small-group instruction allows teachers to notice gaps, celebrate progress, and adjust support.
Students can move levels during the year when progress or need indicates a change.
At-home study is provided to reinforce concepts and support continued homeschool progress.
12:00-12:40 PM | Lunchtime Table Talk builds wisdom
At lunchtime, VCSS slows down, shares a meal at a community table built by our students, reflects on God’s Word, and connects the week’s learning to everyday life. Table Talk is a conversation, not a lecture. It begins with cultivating leadership through student-led prayer, then flows into thoughtful questions, strengthening listening skills, connecting biblical truth to real situations, and learning from one another. Table Talk is a place of belonging, gratitude, fellowship and peace.

12:45-2:45 PM | Afternoon builds capability
Afternoons are where learning becomes visible. Students handle real tools, create useful products, cultivate gardens, care for animals, investigate systems, practice hospitality, build businesses, prepare for challenges, make art, learn languages, and serve others.
What the day feels like for a child:
Known - teachers learn who they are, how they learn, and where they are growing.
Active - learning moves between books, conversation, nature, tools, tables, projects, and community.
Purposeful - children understand why a skill matters and how it can bless others.
Challenging - students are expected to think, practice, persevere, and take responsibility.
Safe to grow - mistakes are expected, curiosity is celebrated, and competence develops over time.
Joyful - wonder, friendship, stories, exploration, laughter, muddy boots, and meaningful memories are protected.
What parents can expect:
Clear communication about assessments, placement, at-home study, and program rhythms.
A collaborative relationship in which parent knowledge of the child matters.
A broad enrichment program, with parents continuing homeschool instruction and grade-level progression at home.
Seasonal courses and experiences; not every listed class is offered every semester or every year.
